THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE by Jonathan Demme

starduh

Does the military (or worse: some super-rich private corporation) use brainwashing and mind-control to gain world dominance? Do flies fly? Is the bear shitting in the woods? Is the Pope catholic? OF COURSE they do – at least in this movie, so every conspiracy theorist will feel right at home from the start.
Which is one of the problems of this movie – the big secret is revealed right away, so there is no point in searching the truth out there ….
What’s left is how Ben Marco (Denzel Washington, upright American as usual) and Raymond Shaw (Liev Schreiber) can escape the mind-controlling clutches of Eleanor Shaw (Meryl Streep) and the Manchurian Corporation.
Which leads us directly to the rather confusing ending which leaves room for endless speculations what really happened and why it turns out the way it turns out. An open ending is not necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn’t really fit into this movie. What’s your opinion about the ending?
