SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE by Danny Boyle
How did Jamal K. Malik (Ayush Mahesh Khedekar/Tanay Chheda/Dev Patel), a boy from the slums of Mumbai, reach the last round of India’s version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (A) He cheated, (B) He’s lucky, (C) He’s a genius, (D) It is destiny. Gameshow host Prem Kumar (Anil Kapoor) is convinced Jamal cheated and turns him over to the police on the day before the last question for 20,000,000 rupees. Jamal is tortured until he tells the police how he was able to answer the questions in the show – and each of the answers he learned at a certain point in his life.
Question by question and answer by answer a life of hardships and poverty, but also full of lust for life, is unveiled by Jamal.
Orphaned as a child after his mother was killed in an attack of religious fanatics, Jamal grew up in the slums of Mumbai with his brother Salim (Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail/Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwala/Madhur Mittal), escaped the “orphanage” of ruthless Maman (Ankur Vikal) and lost his childhood love Latika (Rubiana Ali/Tanvi Ganesh Lonkar/Freida Pinto).
And the reason why Jamal partakes in the show and risks everything with the last question is not the money – it’s his desperate attempt to maybe find his lost love Latika in case she sees him on the show.
Slumdog Millionaire is a colorful, beautiful and exotic fairytale – after viewing you won’t know a lot more about the real India, but you may discover your inner romantic and believe a little bit more in answer D: Destiny than before.
Dev Patel and Freida Pinto may be pocketing the fame, but it’s especially the kids who play their young versions who make Jamal and Latika so lovable and unforgettable.
Won 8 Oscars and earned each of them!
