X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE by Gavin Hood

starstarstar

In which the origin story of Wolverine is told, at which was already heavily hinted in the X-Men Trilogy. It begins rather interesting, with Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and his half-brother Victor/Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber) growing up and fighting together in any American war from the Civil War through both World Wars and the Vietnam War. In Vietnam they and their enormous self-healing powers are discovered by Major William Stryker (Danny Huston) and they are coerced into joining his special ops team of mutants. Both brothers have an animalistic side that is embraced by Victor and suppressed by Logan – until Logan volunteers to become Wolverine in exchange for his revenge on the murderer of his girlfriend Kayla (Lynn Collins).

After Logan turns into Wolverine though, not much is going on except of action, fights, explosions, more fights, and the brief introduction of more and more mutants (for possible future X-Men Origins movies?). Suspense is limited, partly for the same reason why Superman is a bit boring – Wolverine is more or less invulnerable and there’s not much that can happen to him.
And then there is the other big problem: Except of Logan’s childhoold, there is nothing really new to be learned about Wolverine. The whole movie is not much more than a longer version of the flashbacks Wolverine had in the X-Men Trilogy. In the trilogy, what we wanted to see was more Wolverine kicking ass – in Origins, some more plot or characterization would have been nice.
