GREEN ZONE by Paul Greengrass
Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Matt Damon) leads a squad assigned with a clear and simple task: Locate and secure Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq at the locations named by intelligence. His men search through location after location but all they find is long abandoned factories and dust. At a debriefing, Miller asserts that intelligence information is wrong, but this is dismissed by higher-ranking officers. While searching another site, Miller is approached by iraqi informer ‘Freddy’ who tells him some high-ranking Ba’ath party members are meeting nearby. Their leader, General Al-Rawi, escapes, but Miller captures one of his men, who is taken away by a Special Forces unit before Miller can interrogate him. Miller goes rogue and joins CIA operative Martin Brown (Brendan Gleeson) who approached him after the debriefing, and goes on a mission to uncover the truth.
Miller: I thought we were all on the same side?
Martin Brown: Don’t be naïve…
UNITED 93 showed how it all started, and in Green Zone, Paul Greengrass hurls us right into the War on Terror. Greengrass and Matt Damon bring enough Bourne into the Green Zone to make the action fans happy, but more important is that some truths are being told in a mainstream movie. That is to say that Saddam was not responsible for 9/11, there were no WMD’s (Weapons of Mass Destruction) in Iraq, and the reasons for invading Iraq were not what the public was supposed to believe. Essential war movie.
In war, truth is the first casualty.
