TRUE GRIT by Ethan Coen and Joel Coen

true grit- embitterment level - disappointment level
To avenge the murder of her father, 14 year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) hires U.S. Marshal (and drunkard) Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) and vain Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon) who is on the trail of the same man for a murder committed in Texas. Against their resistance, Mattie joins them on their hunt which leads them into the wilderness of Indian territory.

True Grit is the Coen brother’s first attempt at a “true” western after western-influenced No Country For Old Men – and at their first shot they prove that the western, despite many claims to the contrary, is still very much alive.
Violent, gritty, with just the right touch of humor, great performances and richness of language, True Grit is a rare case of a remake (True Grit with John Wayne) – or recreation (based on the Charles Portis novel True Grit) – the world has actually been waiting for.

TRON: LEGACY by Joseph Kosinski

tron: legacy - embitterment level - disappointment level

20 years after Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) disappeared in Cyberspace his son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) accidentally gets sucked into the grid as well and is quickly forced to take part in deadly disc fights. He meets CLU, a young doppelganger of Kevin Flynn and the ruler of the grid, is rescued by Quorra (Olivia Wilde) and finally meets his father who is trapped here since his disappearance. Together they must not only find a way back into the real world, but also save humanity from CLU.

Back in 1982, Tron was groundbreaking in concept and style Рtoday where 3D, virtual realities and rogue computer programs are quasi-standard, Tron: Legacy is doomed to disappoint. Jeff Bridges (a somewhat duderized Flynn) and Olivia Wilde (bravely and successfully avoiding the clich̩ of slinky eye-candy) are not to blame, and the grid and light-cycles look quite cool for a while, but both plot and good old-fashioned fun get lost along the way. A good attempt, but taking itself too seriously and trying too hard to convince.

LITTLE FOCKERS by Paul Weitz

little fockers - embitterment level - disappointment level

The Fockers (Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, Teri Polo) and the Byrnes’ (Robert de Niro, Blythe Danner) and Kevin (Owen Wilson) are all back, and they are joined by Jessica Alba, Laura Dern and Harvey Keitel this time. With that star power and one great (Meet the Parents) and one decent (Meet the Fockers) film before, what can go wrong?
Unfortuntely, the answer is: Everything.
Where Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers where funny and witty, Little Fockers is rude and stale. The gags are lame, tasteless and unfunny, the plot is dumb and bland, what should be entertaining is just embarassing. For completists only, and the second star just for sentimental reasons. Avoid.

MEGAMIND by Tom McGrath

megamind - embitterment level - disappointment level
Megamind (Will Ferrell), a super-intelligent alien, comes to earth on the same day as Metro Man (Brad Pitt). While Metro Man is the born hero, Megamind’s destiny seems to be that of a super villain. Growing up, Megamind is constantly losing against Metro Man – until he finally kills his nemesis. But what is a super villain without a superhero?

Colorful and quite funny, pointlessly in 3D, but not very original, Megamind is fun to watch but has it’s flaws. Megamind hardly offers anything that you don’t have seen in other superhero movies, the plot may be a bit too complicated for the target audience, and while it’s entertaining, there’s something missing. If you want to watch just one animated superhero movie, then make it The Incredibles.

SHREK FOREVER AFTER by Mike Mitchell

shrek forever after - embitterment level - disappointment level
Shrek, missing being a “real ogre”, is tricked by Rumpelstiltskin into giving him one day of his life in exchange for one day being a real ogre again. Rumpelstiltskin takes away the day Shrek is born, so he never rescued Fiona from the dragon and never met Donkey and Puss in Boots. Now Rumpelstiltskin is the evil emperor of Far Far Away, Fiona is the leader of the resistance, and Shrek has only one day to straighten things out.

The latest – and probably last – of the Shrek franchise, Forever After comes in 3D, but without the charm, wit and sparkling originality of Shrek. Arguably better than Shrek the Third and not a total fail, it’s still a disappointment and it seems about time to let the franchise rest in peace.
